Fly Tying Friday - @meyer.buck

This week's #flytyingfriday features glass beads used for Pat Dorsey's @patdorseyflyfishing "Mercury" style flies. The purpose of the clear glass bead is to create a gas bubble effect, which imitates the emerging stage of many aquatic insects (midges, mayflies, and caddis). We carry size small (#14-18 hooks) and size x-small (#18-22 hooks) @bluequillangler and these are available both at our physical location and at our online store. If fly tying isn't your thing, all of the patterns pictured from @umpquafeathermerchants are also available at the Blue Quill Angler and we have a range of sizes ready to fish!

For this week's flies of the week, as selected by the @bluequillangler staff, we've chosen a few tried and true midge dry patterns. Winter fly boxes are usually packed with tiny midges and BWO nymphs, but it is always worth having a handful of small dries for times when the fish start to look up and sip adults on the surface. You'll notice that several of these patterns include a hot wing - this is helpful in tracking these tiny flies on the water. One tip is to use two flies, with the lead fly being a fly that you can see and a trailer that uses a more natural size and coloration.

Tactical Tuesday - @kelso_ff

BALANCING A EURO ROD.
There are many things that go into a good Euro Nymphing set-up, and one of the most important things is balance. Balance is partially personal preference, but most anglers typically like the balance point somewhere up on the blank side of the cork. Personally, I like it quite close to the end of the cork so I can nymph with a finger on the blank—giving me a little more sensitivity for strike detection.

For most 10’ 3 weight rods, a reel that is app. 5 oz will get you to this balance point. A balanced rod will help you with arm fatigue throughout the day, and will keep you fishing strong.

TAILS FROM A DRIFT @myflyfishingbuddy

The cold months of the year are not only a fine time to catch a few fish with frozen fingers and guides but it is also a good time to explore your waters. Take a few minutes here and there, keep your hands in your gloves or pockets and walk the river, study your favorite holes.
The typically lower flows will allow you to see subsurface structure which, for most of the year, is...well...well below the surface.
Understanding the subsurface structure will allow you to comprehend better how a fish may lie in a particular run. It will also afford you the opportunity to potentially hang up on fewer rocks. This understanding will ostensibly allow you to make more productive drifts. If memory serves you well, you may even lose fewer hooked fish to structure. Knowing where subsurface hazards are does put you in a better position to avoid them when a fish is making his/her run.

It's amazing what a few hours on a #river can do to a person! Nothing like clearing the head with the #flyrod chasing beautiful Rocky Mountain #trout. If you're heading out anytime soon, target deeper water and throw small flies - sizes #20-24. Keep your eyes open for little rises in slow water! A tiny #parachuteadams or #mattsmidge will do the trick on top. Below the surface, #mercuryblackbeaties #rainbowwarriors #bloodmidges #WD40s all have been productive as of late. We will continue this week with our preparation during the off season for #stillwaterflyfishing. Last week we talked about preparing your equipment for the off season and today we will talk about preparation for you, in the offseason. This is just good advice for any fly fishing trip you have in the future. When I’m not on the water I’m trying to soak up as much information that I can. Things like; Reviewing our notes, studying maps, checking out websites, apps and books. These are just a few things thatwe do to prepare for the next season. We try and soak up as much information as possible and we bounce ideas and share information and come up with plans for our future trips and classes. Preparation is everything when it comes to fly fishing Stillwater’s and it can help you be successful every time out.

A quick example of this was our recent trip to Wyoming. We knew we wanted to fish some new still water we had never been on before. We studied the maps and strategically planned where we wanted to go. After many discussion over several weeks we had a greatplan built off of all the information we gathered from maps and reading up on the area. We also checked the weather forecasts and made plans around the wind and snow conditions. Very important to know the wind conditions for your local lakes. Those winds will give you keys to where the fish may be feeding especially in the winter time. We also made sure the reservoir was open and ice hadn’t formed yet. We picked a couple areas that we knew had decent shelves with drop offs close buy and the added bonus of thosewinds blowing across those shelves and points. We knew there would be food in those areas so the fish shouldn’t be far away. All this preparation lead to a very successful day of exploring and learning and because of all this preparation we got into some great still water fish. Well will continue next week with more preparation tips. Thanks for following us!
