Pat Dorsey’s Fishing Report: Spinney Mountain – Charlie Meyers SWA

The Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area (commonly called the Spinney Mountain Ranch or Dream Stream) is a classic meandering, meadow stream. Anglers have the opportunity to catch rainbows, cut-bows, cutthroats, and brown trout when they fish this fabled stretch of water.

Current Conditions

Clarity: Good

14 Day Forecast: Look for good hatches of Blue Wing Olives and Midges with Sporadic hatches of Tricos and Caddis on warmer days

Tips and Other Information: Overall, the fishing is fair to good at the Dream Stream right now. We have seen a consistent flow coming out of Spinney right around 120 cfs. Anglers are finding  a few “good fish” but they are covering lots of water and working hard for their catch. The kokanee are in the river but not in super high numbers or pods quite yet. We did see a decent push over the weekend though and this has made finding them a bit easier. Good patterns for salmon at the dream are worms, pats rubber legs, eggs and bright nymphs like copper johns and psycho princes. They are widely spread out in the river and are typically hanging in some of the deep runs at oxbows. The brown trout run has begun but its is small as of yet. A few nice fish have been caught but we are still waiting for a big push. Anglers are having the best luck on egg patters, midge emergers, and baetis nymphs. Please refrain from walking in the river from spot to spot as this is prime time for spawning fish and redds are present throughout the river.

Effective Patterns: #14 Mayer’s Mini Leech, #10 Pine Squirrel Leech, #20-22 JujuBaetis, #18-22 Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tail, #18-20 Buckskin, #18 Hot Tail Flash Egg, #22-24 Top Secret Midge, #22-24 Black Beauty, #20-22 Stalcups Baetis, #20 Mathew’s Sparkle Dun, #20-26 Parachute Adams, and #22 Matt’s Midge.
