Pat Dorsey’s Stream Report: North Fork of the South Platte River

Trophy trout await you on many of our leases on the North Fork of the South Platte.  To book a day on Boxwood, Long Meadow, North Fork Ranch, or the Meadows, call the Blue Quill Angler (303-674-4700) and we’ll gladly assist you.

Current Conditions:

Flows: 95 cfs

Clarity: Off-colored

Water Temperature: Low 40’s

Hatches: Midges and sporadic caddis

14 Day Forecast: Look for good fishing in the weeks to come.  The North Fork flows will vary depending on warm weather trends. Currently the flow is all natural and about as perfect as it gets!

Tips and Other Information:  Fishing along the North Fork of the South Platte has been good as of late.  Anglers are fooling trout with an assortment of small bead heads, midges, egg patterns, San Juan Worms, and leech imitations. The North Fork is experiencing the onset of spring run-off. A little color can be a distinct advantage for the angler however. The Roberts Tunnel was shut off today (May 19, 2019) and will be off until further notice. Denver Water may turn on the tunnel mid summer if there is down stream demand. In the meantime, the river will be all natural flows…

Effective Patterns:  #10 Chamois Leech, #14 San Juan Worm, #16 Sowbugs, #18 Hot Tail Flash Eggs, #18 Black Pheasant Tail, #20-22 Bead Head Flashback Black Beauties, #20-22 Pearl Jams, #20-22 Rainbow Warriors, and #20-22 red midge larva.

About Long Meadow Ranch

Long Meadow Ranch is located about 50 miles from Denver in Shawnee, Colorado and is comprised of over two miles of private trout waters along the North Fork of the South Platte River. It is just upstream from Boxwood Gulch and offers some of the finest private water fly fishing trips in the state. It is managed by Dan Mauritz, owner of Boxwood Gulch Ranch, for trophy trout fishing.

Anglers claim that Long Meadow holds some of the biggest fish around! During the summer months stimulators, green drakes, red quill, and hoppers work well while nymphs work well all year long. Long Meadow Ranch is the perfect place to catch the five fish that comprise the Colorado Grand Slam: a rainbow, cutthroat, hybrid cut-bow, brook trout and a brown.
