Fly Fishing In Patagonia

December 2018 Trip is Sold Out!

You are invited to join Pat and Kim Dorsey to go to the Rio Manso Lodge on December 9-15, 2018 or April 21-28, 2019.This is a 7 night, 6 day package, like we have done in the past. The cost of the trip is $4750.00. The summer trip (December) is to catch the dragon fly hatch, but if the dragon flies are not flying (due to cold weather) you’ll fish streamers or pound fish up with big Chernobyl Ant-type dry flies. We fish both lakes and rivers. The still water fishing is truly amazing. Anglers have the opportunity to catch brown, brook, and rainbow trout up to 24 inches.

April (autumn) is a wonderful time to fish Patagonia. It is the equivalent of September in North America. Both browns and brook trout become more aggressive as they add weight in preparation for spawning season. It is also the best time of the year to catch a truly large brown. Beautifully colored brook trout up to 4-5 pounds, 4-8 pound browns, and hefty rainbows are the targets. Browns up to 20 pounds are not unheard of. This will be hosted by Pat Dorsey and is limited to 8 anglers. This is dedicated to a group of hard core anglers who don’t mind battling the elements, working hard, hunting big brown trout. If weather permits, we will drive to the Limay River from the lodge a day or two.

Recognized as the Orvis 2015 International Destination of the Year, Rio Manso Lodge provides all the comforts of home. Each of the lodge’s 9 rooms face northwest with spectacular views of Lago Hess and the Andes Mountains. If the weather is clear, the mountains looks close enough to touch!

Fly fishing in the heart of Patagonia is a unique experience. When you visit Rio Manso Lodge, you will have the opportunity to fish a variety of fisheries including small streams, large rivers, intimate spring creeks, and deep lakes where monster brown, hefty rainbow and trophy brook trout swim.

Fly Fishing in Patagonia - Guided Fly Fishing with the Blue Quill Angler

When fishing the Rio Manso, a lot of your time is spent fishing with streamers and sinking fly lines. Hatches on most of the river are sporadic and the biggest fish are often enticed with streamers. There are several stretches of the river where nymph fishing is effective, especially on one of the beautiful spring creeks where sight casting to cruising fish can be a delightful change of pace.

Patagonia – A Fun Dry Fly Fishing Challenge

Famous for its unique blend of big fish and technical fishing, the smooth, glassy currents near the channels of Lago Hess provide a great dry fly challenge to any angler. Similar in nature to a big spring creek, large fish often cruise the banks making this area a must-fish for any Rio Manso angler! Even though these fish can be extremely selective, many Rio Manso guests consider this their favorite area because some of the largest fish in the watershed are fooled in this area.

One of the jewels at Rio Manso Lodge is Lago Fonck. This four mile long stillwater offers big rainbows, browns and brook trout. Dragon flies, damsels, and caddisflies all hatch on the lake and trout cruise the lakeshore weed beds in search of a meal. This presents the perfect opportunity to fish with big dry flies or a streamer to fool these monsters. You’ll fish the edges from a Carolina skiff, working the structure where rainbow, brook, and the occasional brown reside.
