This is one of the most important ideas in fly fishing because your fly needs to enter the same feeding lane as the natural food.

What Is a Feeding Lane?

A feeding lane is a path through the current where drifting food repeatedly reaches a trout.

A fish may move only a few inches or a foot to take food, then return to nearly the same holding position.

If your fly is drifting two feet to the side of the trout’s feeding lane, changing to a different fly may not help. Moving the same fly into the correct lane often will.

When nymph fishing, first think about depth and drift. Change the fly pattern after you are reasonably confident your flies are reaching the fish.

Trout Do Not Always Feed on the Bottom
