Subsurface patterns which incorporate feathers can create some of the most attractive and effective flies. Whiting Farm's Soft Hackle and Chickabou pelt comes with two very unique feathers - soft hackle and chickabou. The 2 different types of feathers on each pelt provide a multitude of applications for these subsurface flies.
Soft Hackle
The top portion of the pelt contains two panels of full web, Matuka type, wet fly feathers. The feathers on either panel are mirror images of one another and so can be paired for balanced opposing sides of the fly. These feathers are also excellent in a wrapped application. Because of their breadth they can create collars in a hook size range of #2-#10. Making these soft hackle feathers great for stillwater patterns, Matukas, Sculpin patterns, streamers, saltwater, bass and steelhead flies.
Chickabou
Chickabou feathers are the marabou-like feathers at the narrow end of the pelt. These feathers are much finer and more delicate than traditional marabou, which can be too large and coarse for some patterns. Chickabou is mostly used in two basic ways. When tied on at the rear of the fly, Chickabou provides an exceptionally alive appearing tail for damsel patterns, nymphs for stillwater patterns, and smaller buggers. When tied onto the body of the fly, either sparsely or generously, an incredibly alive breathing and undulating motion of the Chickabou occurs in even the slightest water movement.
