Step 1 — Start the Thread

Start the thread behind the bead or a short distance behind the hook eye.

Trim the tag end and wrap the thread toward the rear of the hook.

Step 2 — Tie In the Copper Wire

Place a length of fine copper wire along the side of the hook shank.

Secure it with thread wraps as you continue toward the bend.

Keeping the wire tied along the shank helps maintain an even underbody.

Step 3 — Measure the Tail

Select a small bundle of pheasant tail fibers and align their natural tips.

A good starting proportion is a tail approximately half to two-thirds the length of the hook shank.

Hold the measured fibers on top of the hook.

Step 4 — Secure the Tail With a Pinch Wrap
