July Fly Fishing Outlook – Denver Front Range

July brings classic summer fishing conditions to Colorado's Front Range. Runoff is largely behind us, rivers have settled into their summer flows, and trout are feeding aggressively during the cooler parts of the day. The key to success this month is timing. Early mornings and evenings will provide the best fishing as water temperatures remain cool and insect activity is at its highest. During hot afternoons, anglers should monitor water temperatures closely and avoid fishing streams that become too warm, especially smaller freestone creeks.

Tailwaters including Deckers, Cheesman Canyon, Eleven Mile Canyon, the Dream Stream, and the Blue River continue to offer the most consistent fishing thanks to stable flows and cold water releases. Freestone rivers like Clear Creek, the Arkansas River, and the Upper Colorado can also fish exceptionally well during morning hours, with terrestrial fishing improving as July progresses.

July marks the arrival of hopper season, making dry-dropper rigs increasingly effective throughout the Front Range. Caddis, PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and midges remain important, while ants, beetles, and hoppers become a larger part of the trout's diet. Trout will often hold along undercut banks, grassy edges, deeper riffles, and shaded runs where they have access to cooler water and steady food.

As summer temperatures increase, conservation becomes even more important. Carry a stream thermometer, fish during the coolest hours of the day, land fish quickly, and avoid targeting trout when water temperatures approach or exceed 68°F. Healthy fish released under the right conditions help ensure great fishing throughout the remainder of the season.

Overall, July offers some of the most enjoyable fly fishing of the year. Anglers who start early, adapt to changing conditions, and focus on cooler water will find excellent opportunities across the Denver Front Range and South Platte system.
