It can be made from natural fur, synthetic fibers, or blends of both.

  • Smooth bodies: Fine dubbing can create slim, neat profiles.
  • Buggy bodies: Coarser fibers can imitate legs, gills, or movement.
  • Flash: Synthetic blends can add sparkle and attraction.
  • Color: Dubbing is available in nearly every natural and fluorescent shade imaginable.

One of the most common beginner mistakes is using too much dubbing. A very small amount goes a long way.

Feathers

Feathers are among the most versatile materials in fly tying. Depending on the feather, they can create tails, wings, bodies, legs, collars, and hackle.

Different feathers have very different characteristics.

  • Stiff fibers can support dry flies on the surface.
  • Soft fibers move naturally underwater.
  • Long fibers may create tails or flowing motion.
  • Webby feathers create soft, full profiles.

Hackle

Hackle is a feather used by wrapping its stem around the hook so the fibers radiate outward from the body.

  • Create a soft collar that pulses in the current.

The stiffness, length, and density of the fibers all affect the finished fly.

Marabou

Marabou is a soft, mobile feather material often used in streamers and larger nymphs.

In water, marabou breathes, pulses, and collapses in a very lifelike way. That movement makes it especially effective for tails and bodies on patterns such as the Woolly Bugger.

Marabou is easy to work with, but beginners often use too much. A sparse amount usually moves better than a large bulky clump.

Hair

Deer hair, elk hair, calf hair, bucktail, and other natural hairs are used in many fly patterns.

Hair can be used for:

  • Dry-fly wings.
  • Streamer wings and tails.
  • Hopper and terrestrial bodies.
  • Buoyant heads and bodies.
  • Posts and visibility features.

Some hair is hollow and buoyant. Other hair is solid and better suited for long, flowing streamer wings.

Hair behaves very differently depending on where it comes from on the animal and how it is processed, so material selection becomes more important as you advance.

Wire

Fly tying wire is used for several jobs.

  • Ribbing: Creates visible segmentation around a fly body.
  • Durability: Reinforces fragile materials.
  • Weight: Adds mass and helps a fly sink.
  • Color: Colored wire can become part of the visual design.

Wire is available in different diameters and colors. Small flies generally use fine wire, while larger patterns can use heavier wire.

The Zebra Midge you will tie later in Level 1 is a great example of wire being used to create both segmentation and durability.

Tinsel and Flash

Tinsel and synthetic flash materials reflect light and can add attraction to a fly.

They may be used as:

  • Ribbing.
  • Wing cases.
  • Streamer flash.
  • Bodies.
  • Hot spots or accent materials.

Flash can be very effective, but more is not always better. A few fibers can create a subtle trigger without overpowering the natural profile of the fly.

Chenille

Chenille is a fuzzy cord-like material that can be wrapped around the hook to build a body quickly and evenly.

It is commonly used on Woolly Buggers, streamers, stonefly patterns, and many warmwater flies.

Because it builds body quickly, chenille is an excellent material for beginners learning how to create a consistent profile.

Yarn and Floss

Yarn and floss are used to create bodies, tags, posts, wings, and other components.

Some yarns are fuzzy and absorbent. Others are smooth and bright. Synthetic yarns may float well or create translucent effects in the water.

Floss creates smooth, brightly colored bodies but requires good thread and material control to avoid uneven wraps.

Foam

Foam is lightweight, buoyant, durable, and easy to shape.

It is commonly used for:

  • Hoppers.
  • Beetles.
  • Ants.
  • Stoneflies.
  • Attractor dry flies.
  • Floating indicators incorporated into fly patterns.

Foam is especially valuable when a fly needs to remain buoyant or support heavier materials on the surface.

Synthetic Fibers

Modern fly tying includes a huge range of synthetic fibers designed to imitate hair, wings, baitfish, insect shucks, legs, and more.

Materials such as Antron, Z-Lon, polypropylene yarn, EP-style fibers, and many proprietary blends can create effects that are difficult to achieve with natural materials alone.

You do not need to know all of them now. Learn what a material is supposed to do in a pattern, and then the names become much easier to understand.

Rubber and Silicone Legs

Rubber and silicone legs add movement and profile to nymphs, streamers, hoppers, stoneflies, and attractor patterns.

They move with very little current and can make a fly look alive even when the fly itself is drifting slowly.

Like flash, leg material is easy to overuse. A few well-placed strands are often enough.

Beads

Beads are not technically a fiber or feather, but they are an important fly tying material and appear on many modern trout flies.

Beads can:

  • Add weight.
  • Help a fly sink quickly.
  • Create a finished head.
  • Add flash or color.

Brass beads add moderate weight. Tungsten beads are much denser and help flies sink faster without dramatically increasing their size.

Jig flies commonly use slotted beads designed to fit around the bend in the eye of a jig hook.

Adhesives, Head Cement, and UV Resin

Many fly tyers use adhesives to strengthen or finish parts of a fly.

Common options include:

  • Head cement: Thin finish applied to thread wraps and fly heads.
  • Super glue: Used sparingly to strengthen materials or underbodies.
  • UV resin: Liquid resin that hardens when exposed to a UV light.

These products are useful, but they should support good tying—not replace it. A fly should still be tied securely before adhesive is added.

Material Quantity Matters

One of the most important beginner lessons is that fly tying usually requires less material than you think.

Too much material can:

  • Create bulky bodies.
  • Hide the hook gap.
  • Reduce movement.
  • Make the fly harder to cast.
  • Crowd the hook eye.
  • Distort the proportions of the pattern.

Sparse flies are often easier to tie and fish just as well—or better.

Buy Materials by Pattern

Walk into a well-stocked fly shop and the tying material wall can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of colors, textures, feathers, hairs, synthetics, beads, wires, and specialty products.

You do not need all of them.

The most efficient way to build your material collection is to choose a fly you want to tie, buy the materials for that pattern, and then move to the next pattern.

Over time, you will notice that many of the same materials appear again and again. That is when your bench begins to become a useful collection rather than a pile of random supplies.

Learn What the Material Does

Material names change. Brands change. New products appear every year.

The most valuable skill is understanding the job a material performs.

If a recipe calls for a specific synthetic wing material and you understand that its job is to create a translucent trailing shuck, you can eventually evaluate substitutes with similar properties.

That is the difference between simply following a recipe and understanding how flies are built.
