Cheesman Canyon Fishing Report

South Platte River · Below Cheesman Dam, Colorado

Plan your day in Cheesman Canyon with fishing conditions, river flows, suggested flies, and practical advice from Blue Quill Angler.

ON THE WATER

Current fishing report

Report updated

Cheesman Canyon is fishing in a low, clear and highly technical fall pattern. Check the current release before the trip. Fish are selective in deeper buckets, shelves and soft seams. Midges and Baetis dominate, with cloudy afternoons creating the best opportunities for small BWO dries and emergers. Minimize wading, adjust weight precisely and give other anglers room. Brown trout spawning activity requires special care around clean gravel.

Fishing tips

Use Mercury Black Beauty and Juju Baetis on a light, carefully weighted nymph rig, with RS2 or Barr’s Emerger when trout feed nearer the film. On cloudy BWO afternoons, present a Blue Wing Olive dry or Film Critic with a long leader. Avoid spawning gravel and keep wading to a minimum.

PLAN YOUR DAY

Fishing Cheesman Canyon

The fishery

Cheesman Canyon is a hike-in section of the South Platte below Cheesman Dam. Granite boulders, deep pockets, shelves, and narrow feeding lanes create demanding water for brown and rainbow trout. Clear water and sustained fishing pressure reward patient observation, careful approaches, and accurate presentations. Nymphing is a dependable starting point, with opportunities for dry flies when trout rise during a hatch. Choose your fishing position before entering the water and keep unnecessary wading to a minimum.

Access & parking

The Gill Trail provides hiking access into Cheesman Canyon. Plan for uneven terrain and additional time to reach the river and return to your vehicle. Use designated parking, follow established trails, and respect posted boundaries and private property. Carry drinking water, weather protection, and appropriate footwear. Check current trail conditions and closures before leaving, and choose river-entry points carefully rather than scrambling down unstable slopes.

Seasons & techniques

Midges provide an important food source throughout the year, while Baetis create seasonal opportunities for small nymphs, emergers, and dries. Warmer months can bring additional mayflies and caddis. Observe insects and feeding behavior before selecting a presentation. In clear water, a controlled drift and precise depth adjustment often matter more than repeated fly changes. Reservoir releases influence fishing conditions, so check the current flow rather than relying on a fixed seasonal expectation.

Regulations & river care

Cheesman Canyon is managed as catch-and-release water. Check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations for the exact reach and follow posted restrictions. Keep fish in the water while unhooking them, minimize handling, and avoid fishing to spawning trout or walking through redds. Give other anglers room and use established trails to protect streambanks. Changing releases, slippery rocks, and deep pockets require cautious wading; a familiar crossing may become unsafe when flows change.
