Bob Dye, fly fishing guide at The Blue Quill Angler

Meet the Blue Quill Team

Bob Dye

Fly Fishing Guide

With more than two decades of guiding experience, Bob Dye brings an exceptional depth of knowledge to Colorado fly fishing. He is especially well known for his expertise on the Colorado River, where years of guiding, observing hatches, and studying the river have made him one of the Blue Quill's most experienced float guides.

About Bob

Bob has guided fly anglers for more than 20 years and has spent well over a decade as part of the Blue Quill guide team. Much of that time has been centered on the Colorado River, a river he knows in remarkable detail from both a fishing and natural-history perspective.

His experience goes far beyond simply knowing where fish tend to hold. Bob has spent years studying seasonal hatches, tributaries, access points, river character, and the subtle changes that make one section of the Colorado fish differently from another.

At The Blue Quill

Bob spends much of his guiding season on float trips on the Upper Colorado River. His combination of river knowledge, practical fishing experience, and a calm, straightforward teaching style makes him a great fit for anglers who want to understand not just how to catch fish, but why a particular approach works.

Whether the day calls for nymphing, streamers, or taking advantage of a hatch, Bob brings decades of experience to the decisions that shape a successful day on the water.

He Wrote the Book on the Colorado River

Fly Fishing Guide to the Colorado River and Tributaries by Bob Dye

In 2018, Bob published Fly Fishing Guide to the Colorado River and Tributaries, a detailed guide to the river from its headwaters through western Colorado. The book reflects the same depth of observation and river knowledge that Bob brings to his guided trips.

Bob is also a member of the Simms Ambassador Team, another reflection of the experience and standing he has built over a long career in fly fishing.

Fishing With Bob

A day with Bob is rooted in experience. He pays close attention to water conditions, insect activity, fish behavior, and the angler in front of him, then adjusts the day accordingly.

For newer anglers, that means clear instruction and practical fundamentals. For experienced anglers, it can mean digging deeper into the details of presentation, fly choice, seasonal patterns, and how to approach one of Colorado's most diverse trout rivers.

Beyond Fly Fishing

Bob's connection to the outdoors extends well beyond trout fishing. When he is not guiding or spending time on the river, he enjoys training dogs and upland bird hunting.

That year-round interest in the outdoors is part of what makes time with Bob feel less like a scripted guide trip and more like a day spent with someone who has made rivers, wildlife, and outdoor pursuits a central part of his life.

Meet Bob

Few things replace time on the water. Bob's decades of guiding the Colorado River give anglers the benefit of thousands of observations, decisions, and lessons gathered one day at a time.
