Trout Fishing And The Dangers Of High Water Temperatures

Summer offers some of the year's best fly fishing opportunities, but it also presents challenges for trout. As water temperatures rise, trout experience increased stress and lower dissolved oxygen levels, making them more vulnerable during catch-and-release fishing.

One of the most important habits every summer angler should adopt is carrying a stream thermometer. Water temperature—not air temperature—should guide your fishing decisions. Trout generally thrive in water temperatures between 50°F and 65°F. Once temperatures approach the upper 60s, trout become increasingly stressed, and the effects of being caught and released can be significantly more harmful.

During hot weather, consider fishing early morning half-days rather than staying on the water through the afternoon. Water temperatures are typically at their lowest around sunrise and often climb rapidly throughout the day. By starting early and finishing before the warmest part of the afternoon, anglers can enjoy productive fishing while reducing impacts on trout.

It's also important to monitor river conditions throughout your outing. Take temperature readings periodically, especially on sunny days or during periods of low flow. If water temperatures reach 68°F or higher, it's time to call it a day and give the fish a break.

When you do catch fish, fight them quickly, keep them in the water as much as possible, and minimize handling. A trout that swims away strongly may still experience delayed stress if water temperatures are too warm.

Responsible angling helps ensure healthy fisheries for future generations. By carrying a thermometer, fishing during the coolest hours of the day, and knowing when to stop, every angler can play a role in protecting trout during the heat of summer.
