This pattern can imitate quite a few different bugs. Can be fished as a wet fly or sunken dry imitating a midge, mayfly or spider! Don't be fooled, this is a deadly pattern that fish cant resist! Hint hint... grayling and high mountain cutthroat devour this fly.

Black Starling Soft Hackle

Baum Lake in Northern California is an excellent winter fishery. It’s a midge factory and cruising rainbows and browns are frequently on or near the surface feeding. I tested numerous drys and emergers plus several soft hackles. Craven’s juju baetis was a hit but the black starling soft hackle did quite well.
